The Beginning of a Book That Needed to Be Written

The Beginning of a Book That Needed to Be Written

At some point in your late fifties, travel changes from being an escape to something more intentional. You start to notice the quiet details you once hurried past, like morning markets, simple meals shared in conversation, and the feeling of arriving not just to see, but to understand. For me, this shift happened gradually, over years spent in hotel rooms, on night trains, and in airport lounges, where I finally had time to reflect. Eventually, I realized the stories I’d gathered were lessons worth sharing.

I wrote Travel That Makes Sense After 50 because many travelers our age want the same thing: to see the world without rushing. We want to choose depth instead of speed, and to travel with curiosity, not urgency. The idea is simple: travel feels more meaningful when you go at your own pace, not the pace set by an app, a guidebook, or social media.

The idea for this book came to me while I was sitting in a café in Kyoto, watching a couple in their sixties take their time over tea. They weren’t rushing through a checklist; they were simply present. It made me think of talks I’d had in London, Tokyo, and Frankfurt, where travelers often told me, in their own words: “I just want my trips to matter.”

That idea stayed with me and became the reason I kept writing.

While writing this book, I learned something I wish I had known sooner: travel becomes meaningful when you stop trying to perform and start truly experiencing it. My advice for anyone planning their next trip is simple: plan less, pay more attention, and let a good conversation shape your day.

At its heart, this book shares one main message: travel with intention, respect your time, energy, and curiosity, and you’ll come home with stories that really matter.
